This is what happens in a country with a 43.5% rate of youth unemployment, whose corrupted politicians are more worried about pleasing bankers and keeping their privileges than solving real problems.
It is called the Spanish Revolution, because it has started here in Spain, even though it is now spreading all around Europe. It has some similarities with the protests in Northern Africa, but it has also a big difference: it is a pacific revolution. People are camping in the main squares of every spanish city, big or small, and every day there are debates, speeches, and information given about what we want to change about our system and why.
The great thing about this iniciative is that it is promoted by a non-political organization (Democracia Real), that wants to represent the average spaniard, who doesn’t feel represented by his politicians anymore, and who doesn’t feel part of the system either, because the system doesn’t let him be part of it. And the even greater thing is, although the main part of supporters are young people, sick of having no prospects whatsoever, we are getting an amazing response from our parents and grandparents, who are encouraging us to fight without violence. I can tell they feel nothing but pride for having brought up a generation able to make a change.
I don’t want to bore anyone by writing down a list of the main points of our protestings, if you are interested, you can go here (http://democraciarealya.es/), follow them on twitter (@democraciareal) or on Facebook (I couldn’t find any site in any other language than spanish, sadly). The main point of this big nationwide protest is to show politicians and bankers that we are not just instruments they can use whenever they want to reach their purposes. Politics and Economy should be used for looking after our well-being, not the other way round.
I guess if a non-spaniard reads this, it would be quite difficult for him to relate to what my country is feeling right now. It is just the answer from a society to a so-called “democratic system” who has completely failed, and has no other choice but to change and finally listen to what we want.
